story

Emily Valentine is a creative collaboration between self-taught jewelry makers Liana Soper and Emily Jones. Running their own successful jewelry brands (Liana-Marie Jewelry and Emily Valentine Jewelry), the two designers connected in 2015 through a Toronto boutique where both of their collections were sold. They instantly saw an opportunity to build a community of support and became business confidants and friends - sharing their experiences, workshopping ideas and collaborating on pop-ups together.

In the Summer of 2016, Liana and Emily made the decision to formally partner up, and have combined their unique aesthetics into a shared vision for Emily Valentine. In the Spring of 2017 they launched their debut collection together, which was designed and produced locally in Toronto, and is now sold in boutiques across Canada. The pair are currently designing for Fall/Winter 2017, drawing inspiration from modern art, and organic lines found in nature.

7 Q&As

MOVIDA   What's jewelry to you?

Emily   For me, jewelry is a way to express my mood. No matter what mood I’m in though, I love how jewelry makes me feel pulled-together, even if I’m wearing a t-shirt and jeans.

Liana   Jewelry always makes me feel confident. I’m not a super trendy person generally (my uniform is t shirts and jeans), so I like when I can throw on a cool necklace and have a completed outfit.

MOVIDA   Who is your favourite artist? Why?

Emily   Tough one - I really like Henry Moore. I visit his sculptures often at the AGO.

Liana   There are so many but I’ve always been drawn to Frank Lloyd Wright and his beautiful stained glass windows.

MOVIDA   How did you end up doing what you do now?

Emily   I’ve always enjoyed creating jewelry, and rediscovered my love for it when I was teaching creative workshops in a women’s shelter I used to work at. A friend who owned a boutique on Queen West in Toronto at the time picked up some of my pieces to sell in her shop, and it grew naturally from there.

Liana   I used to work in an art gallery in Oakville (my hometown), and I would help hang the new exhibitions. While there the owners daughter would come in and make jewelry. One day I accompanied her to a local bead shop and that was it, I was hooked! I signed up for a bunch of classes on the spot and the rest is history.

MOVIDA   What was the inspiration behind Emily Valentine's collections?

Emily   Our Fall collection was inspired by modern art,  sculpture, and organic lines found in nature.  I like to  take in my surroundings because an idea can come from anywhere.

Liana   I think Emily summed it up really nicely.

MOVIDA   What's the one piece of jewelry you can't live without?

Emily   Aside from my antique wedding ring that my husband and I picked out together, I’m pretty obsessed with the Long Point Collar. I wear it in gold or silver, and either with or without the pendant, depending on my mood. I love the versatility of this piece so much.

Liana   I have a necklace of my Nonna’s that I will always cherish. From the EV collection, I would say the Era earrings. They really perk up any outfit. They are my go to.

MOVIDA   What's your favourite show or movie?

Emily   Big Little Lies. The story and acting are great, but it’s those Big Sur views that really get me.

Liana   Pride and Prejudice - the one with Keira Knightly.

MOVIDA   Your style icon(s)?

Emily   Lauren Hutton meets Michelle Pfeifer in Scarface.

Liana   Emma Watson, and Julie Sarinana
